A Peninsula CPA for Business Owners Who Need Year-Round Guidance
We are a Bay Area CPA firm serving established small business owners across San Mateo County and California with tax strategy, accounting, and fractional CFO support.
Property values on the Peninsula keep climbing, competition for good work is fierce, and the businesses that build and design for this market can’t afford to make financial calls in the dark. We keep your books current, your taxes planned months ahead, and your numbers translated into decisions you can actually use.
We’re the financial partner behind San Mateo County’s small businesses.
Accounting and Tax Support for San Mateo County Business Owners
Good top-line numbers don’t always mean good news underneath. An owner can point to solid revenue for the year and still have no idea which job, client, or contract actually made the money. Then a tax bill arrives that nobody budgeted for, because federal, state, and local requirements were never connected to begin with.
If your current accountant only reaches out at filing time, sends you reports with no explanation, or takes a week to answer a real question, that’s a sign you’ve outgrown the relationship.
A filed return tells you what already happened. It won’t tell you what to change. What most established businesses actually need is someone watching the numbers in real time, catching problems early, and explaining all of it without the jargon.
That’s the gap Basta & Company fills for our San Mateo County clients — treating routine filings as one piece of a larger financial plan instead of an annual event.
We make sure our clients get:
- Year-round tax planning
- Proactive tax projections and estimated payment guidance
- Clear cash flow monitoring and planning
- Accurate, organized, and up-to-date financial records
- Strategic identification of deductions and tax-saving opportunities
- Reliable monthly and quarterly financial reporting
- Easy-to-understand explanations of financial statements
- Customized accounting systems and workflows
- Timely support and responsive communication
- Ongoing advisory support beyond tax season
We look beyond a single filing to consider accounting readiness, estimated tax needs, entity structure, owner compensation, cash flow, and the connection between business and personal taxes.
Communities We Support Across San Mateo County and the Bay Area
Our clients span San Mateo County and extend well into the surrounding Bay Area.
San Mateo County: Daly City, Colma, Brisbane, South San Francisco, and Pacifica to the north; San Mateo, Burlingame, Hillsborough, Millbrae, Foster City, San Bruno, Belmont, and San Carlos through the central Peninsula; Redwood City, Menlo Park, Atherton, East Palo Alto, Woodside, and Portola Valley to the south; and Half Moon Bay along the coast.
Across the Bay Area: San Francisco to the north; Palo Alto, Mountain View, and San Jose in Santa Clara County; Oakland, Berkeley, and Alameda; Walnut Creek and Concord; San Rafael and Marin County; Napa and Sonoma.
We serve clients across San Mateo, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma counties, plus remote support anywhere in California.
Running a Business on the Peninsula: What Owners Are Up Against
San Mateo County sits at the overlap of two of the strongest economic engines in the country — Silicon Valley to the south and San Francisco to the north — and it shows in the numbers. The county’s property assessment roll has grown every year for well over a decade and a half, a streak with no signs of stopping, and unemployment is among the lowest in California. Life sciences has become a genuine construction driver in its own right, with millions of square feet of new lab space completed or underway in South San Francisco, Millbrae, Burlingame, and San Carlos. Add some of the priciest residential real estate in the country in towns like Atherton, Hillsborough, and Woodside, and there’s steady, high-value work for contractors, architects, and designers who can compete for it.
The cost of getting a foothold here is just as real. Commercial office space is dealing with elevated vacancy even as lab space booms, which makes for an uneven market to read. Labor costs sit near the top of the state, and California’s AB5 worker-classification rules and prevailing-wage requirements on public projects apply with the same weight here as anywhere else.
Registration reflects the county’s patchwork of 20 separate cities and towns. San Mateo County issues a business license only for unincorporated pockets of the county, for a modest flat fee reviewed by the Planning and Building department — everyone else answers to whichever of the 20 incorporated cities and towns they operate in, and each one runs its own process. The City of San Mateo, for instance, requires its business tax to be paid before you even open your doors, with a certificate you’re expected to post on-site. Miss the jurisdiction that actually applies to you, and it’s an expensive fix later.
What tends to separate the businesses that hold up here from the ones that get squeezed isn’t the size of their revenue. It’s whether they know their real job costs, have taxes mapped out before the year closes, and can see a cash crunch coming a quarter before it lands.
Common Questions From San Mateo County Business Owners
Almost nobody calls us just wanting a return filed. There’s usually one specific question sitting behind the call, and it tends to be one of these three.
Q: "Why does cash feel tight when sales are actually up?"
This is one of the most common patterns we see in project-based work, and it's genuinely stressful to live through. It's almost always timing: labor, materials, and subcontractors get paid out well before the client invoice comes back in. We map out where your cash actually goes and flag the tight points before they arrive.
Q: "What did that job actually net me?"
Clean, current books don't automatically answer this. You need reporting tied to the work itself — by project, by client, by month — to see real profit and know which jobs are worth chasing again.
Q: "What's the right call for my business?"
Generic advice rarely fits a construction, architecture, or design business, especially one competing in a market as specific as the Peninsula. We build guidance around your actual numbers and industry — entity structure, tax timing, hiring, equipment purchases, pricing — so decisions come from evidence instead of a guess.
If any of this sounds like you, that’s exactly the conversation we’re here to have.
Financial Leadership for San Mateo County Businesses, Not Just Filing Season
Once a business grows past a certain point, a tax preparer who shows up once a year stops being enough. What actually helps is a partner who can explain what’s happening in the business, show where the cash is really going, get taxes planned well before they’re due, and weigh in on the decisions tied to real growth.
That’s the shift Basta & Company makes with San Mateo County clients: dependable reporting, tax planning that happens ahead of deadlines, and advisory work rooted in the decisions you’re actually facing.
Here’s what we help you avoid:
Tax uncertainty
Cash flow pressure
Inaccurate or outdated books
Missed deductions and tax-saving opportunities
Unexpected tax bills
Entity structure uncertainty
Disorganized accounting systems
Difficulty reaching your accountant/advisor
Confusing financial statements
Weak budgeting and forecasting
Payroll and compliance concerns
Business and personal tax disconnect
We work with clients throughout Santa Clara County, the Bay Area, and California, with flexible remote support available for busy business owners.
What Makes Basta & Company Different in San Mateo County
The owners we work best with want more than a compliance checkbox. They want a CPA who treats taxes, cash flow, and growth as one connected picture instead of separate problems. Our view: accounting shouldn’t just document what already happened — it should tell you what to do next.
Basta & Company brings more than 25 years of CPA experience across the Bay Area to San Mateo County business owners, helping them build stronger financial systems, cut down on tax surprises, and act on reporting that actually makes sense.
Whether you need tax planning, a cleanup of messy books, or ongoing CFO-level support, our team is ready to help you move forward with more confidence.
Tax, Accounting, and CFO Services for San Mateo County Businesses
Experienced accountants at Basta & Company supporting San Mateo County business owners with tax, accounting, and CFO-level advisory work.
Staying compliant across the county's 20 cities and towns
We keep your records organized so whichever city's license and tax requirements apply to you — or the county's, if you're in an unincorporated area — get filed correctly and on time, alongside your state and federal obligations.
Coordinating local, state, and federal filings
With no single set of rules covering the whole county, tax decisions can't be made in isolation. We connect your specific local obligations to your broader California and federal tax plan.
Forecasting cash flow before it gets tight
Payroll, taxes, equipment, and growth spending all draw from the same account. Forecasting lets you plan for those costs instead of scrambling when they land.
Structuring your entity and your own compensation
We help you work through how entity structure, payroll, distributions, estimated payments, and your personal return all interact.
Fractional CFO Services
Many growing San Mateo County businesses need CFO-level strategy before a full-time hire makes sense. We step in with forecasting, KPI tracking, budgeting, and hands-on financial decision support.
How We Work Together
We’re a fully virtual firm. That’s a deliberate choice, not a limitation — it’s what lets us stay responsive, keep our tools current, and give you real attention instead of billing you for face time in a downtown conference room.
- Meetings happen over Zoom. No driving to the Financial District, no parking. We meet when it’s genuinely useful — onboarding, planning, a decision that needs a real conversation — and you get the same partner on every call, not a rotating cast.
- Day-to-day runs on email and a secure client portal. Documents, questions, statements, and requests all live in one place, so nothing gets buried in a thread from three months ago. You and your team see the same numbers we do, in real time.
- You hear back within 48 hours — usually much sooner. Most owners come to us after an accountant who went quiet for days, or weeks, right when it mattered. That’s not us. Prompt communication isn’t a courtesy here, it’s the standard. When a decision is happening now, you get an answer now — not two weeks later.
This is how we hold to the values the whole firm runs on: integrity, responsiveness, clarity, genuine care, and innovation.
More than tax preparation, our clients want more than someone to file forms.
They want to understand:
- How much they should set aside for taxes
- Whether they are structured correctly
- What deductions they may be missing
- How to avoid penalties and surprises
- How taxes affect cash flow
- Whether they should make a large purchase before year-end
- How to pay themselves properly
- What their tax return says about the health of the business
Our goal is to help turn tax information into practical business decisions.
Industry Expertise
“Basta & Co. was recommended to us after we had a series of bad experiences with other accounting firms. We look forward to tax season with Samy in charge of our complex tax situations.”

SLM Architecture and Design
What a great surprise! We were expecting to pay IRS over $10,000 in additional taxes but we ended up with $4,000 tax credits and paid nothing! Samy is amazing! He knows all the recent tax reforms and patiently explains them to us and applies the relevant tax deductible tools and strategies for our business and personal taxes.
Elmira Esmaeili
As a new client I’m delighted to report that my interactions with Basta & Company have been excellent. I’m grateful for the invaluable assistance I’ve so far received from Basta & Company, and staff!
John Meloy
I cannot recommend Samy enough! He helped us with a very challenging 1031 exchange which allowed us to defer our capital gains taxes and purchase a new property. He returns e-mails and phone messages promptly and the best part is that he talks non CPA language to you in order to make sure you understand everything. If I could, I would give him 6 stars!

Insights From Your San Francisco CPA
Do I register with my city, the county, or both?
It depends on your address. San Mateo County issues business licenses only for unincorporated areas, for a flat $50 fee. If you’re in one of the county’s 20 incorporated cities and towns — San Mateo, Redwood City, and Burlingame among them — you’ll register with that city instead, and each one sets its own process and fee. We’ll confirm exactly what applies to you.
Do you help with both business and personal taxes?
Yes, and for most clients that’s the better approach — once entity structure, payroll, and distributions are involved, the two returns rarely stay separate.
Do you offer fractional CFO work alongside accounting here?
Yes. Forecasting, KPI review, and cash flow planning are a real part of what we do for San Mateo County business owners, running alongside full accounting and tax planning.
Do I need business tax planning if I already have a tax preparer?
A preparer reports on what already happened. Planning happens ahead of that, so what you owe isn’t something you find out about after the fact.
Can you help me reduce my business taxes?
Often, yes. We look at entity structure, timing, deductions, and owner compensation to find legitimate savings — built into a plan in advance, not assembled at the deadline.
Do you only work with businesses located in San Mateo County?
No. The Bay Area is central to our work, but we also support business owners across San Mateo County and California through remote support.
Do you work with contractors, architects, or interior designers?
That’s a significant part of our client base, and we’re familiar with the job-costing, payment timing, and prevailing-wage details specific to those industries.
How do we get started with Basta & Company?
Fill out our contact form and tell us about your business, your current tax concerns, and what kind of support you need. If it looks like a good fit, we will invite you for a call to discuss the next step.
