A Contra Costa CPA Firm for Business Owners Who Want More Than a Once-a-Year Tax Filer
Basta & Company works with established small business owners across Contra Costa County, pairing tax strategy, everyday accounting, and fractional CFO guidance under one roof.
Between the cost of doing business here and the sheer number of local rules to track, financial decisions rarely wait until tax season rolls around. We keep your books accurate, your tax planning ahead of the curve, and your numbers explained clearly, so you can make confident calls all year, not just in April.
Consider us Contra Costa’s partner in sustainable growth.
Straightforward Accounting and Tax Guidance for Contra Costa Businesses
Revenue can be rising while your bank account tells a completely different story. Your books might be pristine and still fail to show you which projects, clients, or decisions are actually moving the needle. And tax bills have a way of showing up unannounced when nobody’s explained how federal, California, and your specific city or county rules fit together.
Maybe you’ve also had it with an accountant who only surfaces at filing time, buries you in reports with no explanation, or leaves your calls unanswered for days.
Eventually, simply staying compliant isn’t enough. What you need is a clear read on your numbers, a plan built well before a problem gets expensive, and a CPA who actually walks you through what’s happening.
That’s the role Basta & Company plays — folding these obligations into a bigger financial picture rather than treating them as a once-a-year chore.
- Year-round tax planning
- Proactive tax projections and estimated payment guidance
- Clear cash flow monitoring and planning
- Accurate, organized, and up-to-date financial records
- Strategic identification of deductions and tax-saving opportunities
- Reliable monthly and quarterly financial reporting
- Easy-to-understand explanations of financial statements
- Customized accounting systems and workflows
- Timely support and responsive communication
- Ongoing advisory support beyond tax season
We look beyond a single filing to consider accounting readiness, estimated tax needs, entity structure, owner compensation, cash flow, and the connection between business and personal taxes.
Communities Across Contra Costa and the Bay Area We Support
We work with business owners throughout Contra Costa County and the broader Bay Area.
Around Contra Costa: Walnut Creek, Concord, Pleasant Hill, Clayton, and Martinez in the central county; Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda in the Lamorinda area; Danville and San Ramon in the San Ramon Valley; Richmond, El Cerrito, San Pablo, Pinole, and Hercules to the west; and Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, and Pittsburg to the east.
Beyond the county: Oakland, Berkeley, and Alameda; San Francisco across the Bay; San Rafael and Marin County; Vallejo and Fairfield in Solano County; Napa and Sonoma; San Mateo, Redwood City, and Burlingame; and down toward San Jose, Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Santa Clara.
Our client base spans Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties, and we offer flexible remote support anywhere in California.
Contra Costa's 19 Jurisdictions Don't Play by the Same Rulebook
Unlike a single downtown market, Contra Costa is stitched together from 19 separate incorporated cities and towns, each writing its own business license ordinance, plus unincorporated pockets that answer to the county instead. Walnut Creek has its own rate and renewal cycle, Concord has its own zoning sign-off before a license gets issued, and a business straddling city and county lines can end up owing both. Add California’s AB5 worker-classification standard, prevailing-wage rules on public work, and some of the country’s highest labor costs, and it’s easy to see how an owner focused on running the business can lose track of which jurisdiction is actually owed what.
That complexity sits on top of a market with real momentum. Older, established pockets — Orinda, Lafayette, Walnut Creek — keep contractors, architects, and designers steadily employed on remodels, while newer growth out east in Brentwood, Oakley, and Antioch, plus corporate density around Bishop Ranch in San Ramon, keeps generating fresh construction and commercial work. There’s genuine opportunity for a business that’s organized enough to capture it.
That’s the distinction we see play out again and again: it’s rarely the highest-revenue businesses that come out ahead here. It’s the ones who know their actual job costs, have their taxes mapped out before the year closes, and can spot a cash crunch coming before it arrives — regardless of which of the county’s 19 rulebooks applies to them.
The Questions Our Clients Come to Us Asking
Very few clients walk in wanting nothing more than a tax return filed. They usually arrive holding one specific question they haven’t been able to pin down an answer to — and it tends to be one of these three.
Q: "My revenue is up — so why does it never feel like there's enough cash?"
This is the pattern we run into constantly in project-based work, and it's genuinely stressful to live through. The culprit is almost always timing: payroll, materials, and subcontractors get paid out weeks or months before the client invoice comes back in. We build a clear picture of where your cash actually goes, flag the crunch points in advance, and take the surprise out of a slow stretch.
Q: "What should I actually be doing differently?"
Generic advice rarely applies cleanly to a construction, architecture, or design business, and the internet is full of it. We work from your specific numbers and your specific industry to shape real guidance — entity choice, tax timing, hiring, equipment purchases, pricing — so you're acting on evidence rather than a hunch.
Q: "What does this job actually pay me?"
Current books don't automatically answer this. A business can be fully reconciled and still leave an owner guessing what a given job, client, or month really nets them. We set up reporting that connects your financials to the actual work, so profit shows up at the project level, telling you which jobs to chase again and which ones are quietly eating your margin.
If one of these sounds like something you’ve asked yourself lately, that’s the exact conversation we exist to have.
A CPA Firm Contra Costa Owners Can Lean On as They Grow
Once a business reaches a certain size, an annual tax filer stops cutting it. What owners actually need is someone who can explain the business back to them, show where cash is really headed, get ahead of taxes long before they’re due, and weigh in on decisions tied to real growth.
Basta & Company was built to pull owners out of reactive, once-a-year accounting and into ongoing financial leadership across Contra Costa, that means dependable reporting, tax planning that happens before deadlines force it, and advisory conversations grounded in the decisions you’re actually facing.
We help you address:
Tax uncertainty
Cash flow pressure
Inaccurate or outdated books
Missed deductions and tax-saving opportunities
Unexpected tax bills
Entity structure uncertainty
Disorganized accounting systems
Difficulty reaching your accountant/advisor
Confusing financial statements
Weak budgeting and forecasting
Payroll and compliance concerns
Business and personal tax disconnect
We work with clients throughout Contra Costa, the Bay Area, and California, with flexible remote support available for busy business owners.
What Sets Basta & Company Apart for Contra Costa Businesses
The owners we work best with have moved past wanting a box checked. They want a CPA who treats taxes, cash flow, and growth as one connected system rather than separate problems. Our view is that accounting shouldn’t just document what already happened — it should tell you what to do about it.
Basta & Company brings more than 25 years of CPA experience in the Bay Area to Contra Costa business owners, helping them tighten up financial systems, avoid tax surprises, and act on reporting that’s actually clear.
Tax planning, a books cleanup, or steady CFO-level support, whatever stage you’re at, our team is ready to help you move forward with more confidence.
Tax, Accounting, and CFO Services for Contra Costa County
Basta & Company brings experienced accountants to Contra Costa business owners for tax, accounting, and CFO-level advisory support.
Staying compliant across a fragmented county
We keep your records organized so whichever city or county license applies to you — along with your state and federal obligations — gets filed correctly and on schedule.
Connecting local, state, and federal filings
With 19 different cities setting their own rules, tax decisions can't be made city by city in isolation. We help you see how your specific local requirements tie into your broader California and federal tax picture.
Forecasting cash flow before it gets tight
Payroll, taxes, equipment, and growth spending all draw from the same account. Forecasting lets you plan for those costs instead of scrambling when they land.
Setting up entity structure and owner pay
We help you work through how your entity type, payroll, distributions, estimated payments, and personal return all interact.
Acting as your fractional CFO
Many growing Contra Costa businesses need CFO-level strategy before they're ready to bring someone on full time. We fill that role with forecasting, KPI tracking, budgeting, and hands-on financial decision support.
How We Work Together
We’re a fully virtual firm. That’s a deliberate choice, not a limitation — it’s what lets us stay responsive, keep our tools current, and give you real attention instead of billing you for face time in a downtown conference room.
- Meetings happen over Zoom. No driving to the Financial District, no parking. We meet when it’s genuinely useful — onboarding, planning, a decision that needs a real conversation — and you get the same partner on every call, not a rotating cast.
- Day-to-day runs on email and a secure client portal. Documents, questions, statements, and requests all live in one place, so nothing gets buried in a thread from three months ago. You and your team see the same numbers we do, in real time.
- You hear back within 48 hours — usually much sooner. Most owners come to us after an accountant who went quiet for days, or weeks, right when it mattered. That’s not us. Prompt communication isn’t a courtesy here, it’s the standard. When a decision is happening now, you get an answer now — not two weeks later.
This is how we hold to the values the whole firm runs on: integrity, responsiveness, clarity, genuine care, and innovation.
More than tax preparation, our clients want more than someone to file forms.
They want to understand:
- How much they should set aside for taxes
- Whether they are structured correctly
- What deductions they may be missing
- How to avoid penalties and surprises
- How taxes affect cash flow
- Whether they should make a large purchase before year-end
- How to pay themselves properly
- What their tax return says about the health of the business
Our goal is to help turn tax information into practical business decisions.
Industry Expertise
“Basta & Co. was recommended to us after we had a series of bad experiences with other accounting firms. We look forward to tax season with Samy in charge of our complex tax situations.”

What a great surprise! We were expecting to pay IRS over $10,000 in additional taxes but we ended up with $4,000 tax credits and paid nothing! Samy is amazing! He knows all the recent tax reforms and patiently explains them to us and applies the relevant tax deductible tools and strategies for our business and personal taxes.
Elmira Esmaeili
As a new client I’m delighted to report that my interactions with Basta & Company have been excellent. I’m grateful for the invaluable assistance I’ve so far received from Basta & Company, and staff!
John Meloy
I cannot recommend Samy enough! He helped us with a very challenging 1031 exchange which allowed us to defer our capital gains taxes and purchase a new property. He returns e-mails and phone messages promptly and the best part is that he talks non CPA language to you in order to make sure you understand everything. If I could, I would give him 6 stars!

Insights From Your San Francisco CPA
Do I register with my city, the county, or both?
It depends on your location. Each of Contra Costa’s 19 incorporated cities and towns — including Walnut Creek and Concord — runs its own business license process and fee schedule, while unincorporated areas register with the county instead, businesses that operate in both an incorporated city and an unincorporated area may owe both. We’ll confirm exactly which jurisdictions apply to you.
Can you manage my personal return along with my business taxes?
Yes, and for most clients that’s the better approach, once entity structure, payroll, and distributions are involved, the two returns are rarely separate issues.
Do you provide accounting and fractional CFO services in Contra Costa?
Yes. Financial reporting, tax planning, and fractional CFO work — forecasting, KPI review, cash flow planning — are all part of what we do for Contra Costa business owners.
I already use a tax preparer. Do I still need planning on top of that?
A preparer files based on what already occurred. Planning happens ahead of that, so the amount you owe isn’t something you find out about after the fact.
Is there anything you can actually do to lower my tax bill?
Often, yes. We evaluate your entity structure, the timing of income and expenses, available deductions, and how you’re compensated as an owner to find legitimate savings — built into a plan, not assembled last-minute.
Do you take on clients outside Contra Costa County?
Absolutely. Bay Area is central to our work, but we also serve owners across California through remote support.
Can you help my construction, architecture, or design business?
Yes. Basta & Company works with project-based businesses including construction companies, architecture firms, and interior design businesses. Our work can include job or project profitability, cash-flow planning, accounting systems, tax planning, and CFO-level advisory support.
How do we get started with Basta & Company?
